How to Earn Your Learner’s Permit & Driver’s License (Ages 14–17)
Purchase your Texas-approved Teen Driver’s Ed course (DE-964 certificate included)

Complete the first 6 hours of the course

Pass the learner license (permit) exam—online or at the DPS

Visit your local DPS with a parent/guardian to apply for your permit
  Bring the DE-964 certificate, required documents, and VOE form

Start behind-the-wheel training (44 hours total):
  • 7 hours of driving + 7 hours of observation with an instructor or parent
  • 30 hours of additional practice (including 10 at night)

Complete the remaining online course hours

Hold your permit for at least 6 months and be at least 16 years old

Complete the Impact Texas Teen Driver (ITTD) video course

Schedule and pass the Texas Driving Skills Test at the DPS

Earn your official Texas driver’s license!
